LACHANIA

LACHANIA

A picturesque village with crystal-clear beach waters

DescriptionΠεριγραφηBeschrijving

Built at the foot of Mt. Kopana, the village of Lachania is located 84 km away from the city of Rhodes. The settlement was named after the agricultural crops of the region. Due to its geographical location the village offers a panoramic view of the valleys stretching up to the sea. A place rich in flora and fauna, with whitewashed houses, blue-shuttered windows and lacy azure beaches that compose a graphic image.

In the center of the village you can see old mills, Italian wash-houses and drinking fountains ready to cool passers-by off. Here you will also find the Church of Agios Georgios [St. George] built in 1848, and excavations next to it that have revealed the ruins of a small Mycenaean castle. Gastronomy lovers are strongly advised to enjoy the local delicacies under the shade of the old plane tree and enjoy the serenity of the place.

Combine a stroll in the quaint village of Lachania with a cool dive in the crystal-clear sea waters, as the area is famous for its clean beaches and their warm, turquoise blue waters. You can choose to enjoy the sun and the sea in one of the beach-bars of the organized beaches in the area or on less crowded beaches.

Not far from the village, there is a beach called “Plimiri”, a natural bay of high ecological value that is a breeding ground for the Caretta-Caretta turtle. There is also the Church of Zoodochos Pigi, built on an old Roman building, while the sights of the area also include the Monasteries of Agios Ioannis Prodromos [St. John the Baptist], of Agia Irini [St. Irene], of Agios Loukas (St. Luca) and of Agios Georgios [St. John].
