Festival of Amartos

Just beyond the chapel of Amartos, raised towards the sea, there is a small cave, the Agiopetra [Sacred Rock], where the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary was found by residents of Chalki. Inside the cave, holy water drips from a rock, which pilgrims take along as it is considered a blessing.

A few years after being found, the icon was transferred to the chapel where it is still kept and is a pilgrimage to the villages of the area. It is celebrated on Tuesday after Easter and on September 8, with religious rites, vespers and a traditional feast.
